How health checks work in China
Health checks in China are usually sold as packages rather than assembled test by test. A package sets out the consultation, laboratory tests and imaging included, and is normally completed in a single visit at a dedicated health screening department.
Public hospitals, private hospitals and standalone diagnostic centres all offer packages. The difference tends to be less about the tests themselves and more about appointment times, language support and how results are explained.
What a comprehensive package usually includes
Most comprehensive packages cover a similar core, with optional additions depending on age, sex and personal history.
- Consultation with a doctor before or after testing
- Blood and urine analysis, including cholesterol, liver, kidney and blood sugar markers
- ECG and blood pressure assessment
- Chest imaging and abdominal ultrasound
- Sex-specific screening such as cervical or prostate assessment
- A written report, sometimes with a follow-up appointment
Questions worth asking before you book
A short list of practical questions avoids most difficulties later.
- Is the report issued in English, and is a clinician available to explain it?
- How long does the visit take, and is fasting required?
- Are imaging files provided digitally so another clinician can review them?
- Is the quoted price fixed, and what happens if additional tests are advised?
- Can the provider bill your insurer directly, or will you need to claim afterwards?
